]]>Robin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an illustrator and fine artist. I started building my art business, Martéa Design Co, LLC in 2014. I’ve always been an artist, but I started taking it seriously in 2017 when I went to SCAD to pursue my graduate degree in illustration. I’ve worked in the editorial field with clients such as CNN Style, the Mississippi Free Press, and healthcare such as the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Since color has a big effect on our mood, I like to bring my audience a encouragement and feeling of happiness with my bright color palette. I recently created a story for Jackson Comics, an anthology series dedicated to showcasing Southern artists and writers. I wanted to create a story around the famous blues singer a guitarist, B.B. King, so I imagined an inspiring guitar player stumbling into one of his concerts and gets a chance to show B.B. King his skills on stage. I love bringing to life characters and bringing the viewer into their world.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I do wish that, while going through art school, there was more emphasis on how important it is to find an agent to help secure more illustration work and branding deals. I didn’t find this out until after I graduated and I mainly found out about this route from my peers. Also, I wish there was some type of initiative set in place for artists after selling their work. Most of the time, when a piece of artwork is sold, there aren’t any royalties that the artist could receive afterward. the work could go up in value, but the artist doesn’t see a penny of it. In some cases with illustration, an illustrator may sign a contract that allows for some royalties, but most of the time, we receive a flat fee upfront for work that has the potential to bring in a lot of income for the client.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe I’m now in a place of pivoting. I’m trying my best to secure art representation that could help me secure more illustration work from places like Target, Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. I’d love to work with these clients on a consistent basis to create patterns and designs for stationary, gift items, greeting cards, and even apparel. I’m working on setting up my own stream of income as well by opening a small business where I can sell my own items and generate a market that would purchase items directly from me such as what I previously listed.

I am overjoyed to join Red Fox Literary and to be part of an incredible roster of talent! I am so grateful. Thank you to my rep Lori Steel!
I've had representation by a literary agent on my vision board since 2020 and I cannot believe it has finally come. This is truly a goal that has been met and I am excited for the opportunities that this will bring.

]]>I first learned about Deana's work through a few Pinterest posts. I have this board dedicated specifically to my favorite photography and I saw this gorgeous image of Rihanna in a pink dress that I had to pin. It wasn't until later that I realized it was Deana's work. She also photographed Blood Orange's Freetown Sound album cover, which was a memorable photo.
Deana's High Museum of Art exhibition was akin to viewing a family photo album. When I think of gathering around to view photos, I think of an intimate setting. The photos were very personable and left me feeling like I was part of something. The images gave me a peek into the lives of her subjects.
Per the museum's press statement:
"...Lawson’s highly staged scenes, individuals, couples, and families are pictured in intimate domestic spaces and public settings, interacting with one another. The artist describes her work as “a mirror of everyday life, but also a projection of what I want to happen. It’s about setting a different standard of values and saying that everyday Black lives, everyday experiences, are beautiful, and powerful, and intelligent.” Lawson’s practice is global in scope, as she creates her images throughout the African diaspora in locations as varied as Brooklyn, Haiti, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Southern United States. This broad geographical range points to a collective memory of shared experiences and various cultural histories of the past."

There's currently an Indiegogo campaign running to support the comic book. Please consider donating to the fund. Here's more information about the book:
Jackson Comics is the first comic book anthology created solely by Mississippi artists, and serves as a celebration of our state capital's bicentennial. Local artists have been commissioned to tell their own unique stories in their own unique styles - from dystopian sci-fis to abstract visual poems, from tales of horror to stories of childhood memories in the city, all featuring the city of Jackson. This 30+ page comic book is the first of its kind. It is a celebration of not only Jackson, but also the artist community of Mississippi.
Your donation will go to these artists and the people that made this project possible. However, your money will also be going to creating a second issue and supporting all new artists. It is our hope that soon Jackson Comics may be a place where student and professional artists alike in the state of Mississippi may be able to submit and showcase their work and talent for free. You can help us make that a reality.
Our creators of this issue include (in alphabetical order) Blake Barnes, Chris Windfield, Justin Ransburg, Latrice Lawson, Lyndsay Simpson, Nathan Pietrykowski, Rick Harrison, Robin Martéa, and Steven Butler.
This project has been generously supported by the Mississippi Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Thank you also to our local business supporters: Offbeat; Urban Foxes; Cups; Fondren Fitness; Van's Comics, Cards & Games; Healthwurks; and The Little Yellow Building.

I knew I always felt renewed and full afterwards, like I'd had a meaning experience. In saying that, I'd love to visit more museums in the near future to see more artworks and gain more renewal and knowledge about new artists.
On my museum bucket list, I have, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, TN, The Art Institute of Chicago, The MET and The MoMA to name a few. I'd also love to revisit LACMA since I didn't spend too much time there during my last visit to LA. There are many more, but these are on the top of the list.

I discovered new artists this Summer at the SCAD Museum of Art! I enjoyed visiting the museum and stumbling upon Norbert Bisky's work. The bright colors and dramatic subject matter pulled me in as soon as I walked into the 'Mirror Society' exhibition. I had a chance to speak with a Gallery Guide about the paintings before hand, which gave me a background about the artist.
